Things to do in Munich?
I'm taking my son to Munich for a few days so he can practice speaking German, which he is studying and is passionate about. I've not been before, so if anyone has recommendations of things to do and see there - he's not yet 18, so need to factor that in ;-). Thanks.....

Back from Munich now. Thanks for all the suggestions, decided on the Bayern Munich tour - what a magnificent stadium that is, really puts our one to shame, Dachau, which was an incredibly sobering experience, but I'm very glad I did it. The tour guide we had was superb. Can't recommend that highly enough.

Then the rest of the time was pottering about, samping the local beer and cuisine, looking at interesting people in the parks and enjoying the ambience. A good place to go to.

Thanks everyone for the pointers, appreciated...

Do not go to the Hoffbrau beer hall unless you want to feel like you are drinking in downtown Beijing

Go to one of the Augustina Beer Halls. Augustina is the best brewery in Bavaria. The food is excellent too.

Re: Things to do in Munich?
Don’t Forget, in Munich they speak ‘Bavarian’ which has it’s own culture, language, words and accent.

I have a very good German friend from Nordrhein Westfalen who lives in England and even she can’t understand the Bavarian dialect. She compares it to the strongest Scottish accent.

There are lots of things to see and do in Munich, do some research before you go, it is also a lot bigger than you think.

Whenever I return I always try to do something different each time. I have been to the Bavarian film studios, the various war walks, the biergartens, museums, bus tours, Olympic Stadium and even the Bayern Munich stadium tour.

I did German for 6 years, its pretty irrelevant in the global scheme of things, outside of Germany,Switzerland and Austria its not really recognised. Spanish or French would be better as a European language to lern. As for Munich, Hookers and Cocaine

Ill second Dachau, will never forget it, a short spin on the S Bahn, the Gloockenspiel 10am and/or 11 am near Marienplatz when it erupts into an ancient version of Wooden Heart. The bier halls obviously, the olypmic village a fair bit of history there also , dont know if it operates still but there used to be a great trip down the river on logs terminating In Thalkirchen, a suburb on the river starting maybe Ulm? cant remember. they build the logs into a raft and there is an oompa band lederhosen etc and a few beers , mind you but good fun. A stroll in the English Gardens. It is a great city.

If he's (or you) interested in the 2nd World War there are numerous tours to be taken, I found it a really nice city to wander around! Some stunning ladies as well, long gone are the days of the hairy armpits!

Might sound grim but Dachau was a sobering trip I made when I was there, bizarrely there's a McDonalds at Dachau train station too.
